The LANAP® Procedure in Pleasant View and Ogden, UT

LANAP®
(Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

To better understand the benefits of laser gum disease treatment in Logan, UT, you must first understand how the treatment works. The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) is a relatively short and simple gum surgery alternative that can be completed in just six steps. By following this protocol, Dr. Willard W. Maughan can eliminate bacteria and remove as much as 90 percent of the inflammation in a single session. Here is how it works:

Examining the Depth of Your Periodontal Pockets

The first step is to check the depth of your periodontal pockets. This is done by inserting a small ruler between the gum tissue and surfaces of your teeth. By doing this, we are able to see how severe the loss of attachment has become and adjust the strength of the treatment accordingly.

Eradicating Infectious Bacteria

Once we have determined the extent of the tissue detachment, Dr. Maughan will use the laser to remove bacteria and any infected tissue that is present. Since the laser does not have an effect on bone, teeth, or healthy tissue, LANAP® is a much less invasive gum surgery alternative.

Removing Deposits of Tartar

The laser itself can only help to devalue the tartar deposits without removing them, so we will need to use ultrasonic scalers to remove these deposits from beneath the gum line.

Regenerating Bone and Tissue

Dr. Maughan will then use the laser a second time to promote regrowth of bone and tissue in areas that have been damaged by the infection. This will also cause the blood to clot and stick to the surface of the tooth, reducing the risk of infection and making LANAP® a safer gum surgery alternative.

Tissue Recompression

The next step is to recompress the gum tissue against the tooth surface without using sutures.

Adjusting Your Bite

Finally, the last step in LANAP® is to adjust the pattern of your bite. We will pay special attention to teeth located in areas where bone loss has occurred.

When compared to traditional methods, LANAP® is a safer and less invasive gum surgery alternative. If you would like to know more about your options concerning gum disease treatment in Logan, UT, contact Dr. Maughan and schedule your consultation today!
