Gum Recession
Gum recession is one of the most common and lasting effects of gum disease that can only be treated by a periodontist in Ogden, UT, such as Dr. Willard W. Maughan. Gum recession is a condition that occurs when the gum tissue begins to detach from the surface of a tooth and recede downward toward the root. This can be a cause for concern because, without the protective barrier, the teeth become especially prone to attacks from bacteria. Once the gum recession reaches a point where the tooth root is exposed, that tooth can become very sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. Luckily, there are several ways to reduce gum recession.

Causes of Gum Recession

Before discussing ways to reduce gum recession, we need to address the causes of this condition. Some of the most common causes include:

Periodontal Disease – Infectious bacteria can damage tissue and cause the gum line to recede downward.
Over Aggressive Brushing – Brushing too hard or using a brush with medium or hard bristles can also damage gum tissue and possibly contribute to recession.
Improper Oral Hygiene – Poor oral hygiene practices allow for bacteria to collect and grow, which often leads to gum disease.
Tobacco Use – Tobacco usage is something that you should reduce. Gum recession can result from the use of these products.
Excessive Biting Force – Excessive pressure caused by clenching or grinding teeth, or a misaligned bite can often cause teeth to shift and can lead to a recession of the gum line.

Ways to Reduce Gum Recession

Avoiding or treating the above causes in a timely manner can help you prevent or reduce gum recession. Additionally, you can follow these steps to maintain healthy gums:

• Visit your dentist on a regular basis for cleanings.
• Eat healthy foods.
• Brush and floss your teeth properly and regularly.
• Wear a mouth guard at night to reduce pressure caused by teeth clenching or grinding.
